Work nearly finished at New Street Lofts in downtown Mt. Clemens

A few more people are about to start wandering around downtown Mt. Clemens now that more homes are about to come online in the New Street Lofts project.

Developer Ted Schollenberger, also chair of the Mt Clemens Downtown Development Authority, says most of the work at 64 New Street is basically finished. He hopes to start showing the new six loft apartments to potential residents by February.

"It's coming along very well and it's looking very good," Schollenberger says.

This is just the first phase of the project. Schollenberger expects to let the units remain rentals for a couple of years before selling them and developing the parking lot around the old stone church into 34 more lofts. Overall, the New Street Lofts development will follow the same formula as his River Lofts project.

Lofts will be the latest reincarnation for the old Gibert Baptist Church, built in 1908 just west of Main Street. Over the years it became a warehouse and the studio for Michael Robinson Photography. A fire damaged it in 1979 but the 6,400-square-foot building persevered.

The New Street Lofts will encompass the normal loft principals of exposed utility lines and other raw building features, open floor plans with few walls and large windows. There will also be balconies in the units, which will range in size from 700 to 1,100 square feet. Some will also allow for live/work options that could even open up some ground floor retail space.
