The future isn't quite here for downtown Mt. Clemens, but it's getting close. It's to the point where local residents can catch a glimpse of what things might look like now that the city's Downtown Development Authority has released renderings for its proposed streetscape project.
The multi-million-dollar Downtown Mount Clemens Streetscape Improvement Project calls for completely redoing some of the major arteries in the city center. These improvements include repaving the roads, adding new sidewalks, street lighting, landscaping, street furnishings and installing new sewer lines.
The new streetscape will be installed on Macomb Place from Pine Street to Gratiot AvenueClinton River. Cherry Street from Market Street with a walkway continuing down to the to the Roskopp Municipal Parking Lot will also be upgraded.
The idea is to make downtown Mt. Clemens friendlier to pedestrians and motorists while encouraging more commercial and residential investment. Roads will be narrowed to calm traffic and sidewalks will be widened to encourage public socialization and pedestrian comfort. The project is also expected to create a dense tree canopy to improve visual quality and provide a comfortable environment.
To pull it off the city leaders plan to go for City Council approval later this year and then go for a Michigan Department of Transportation grant to cover much of the cost. Construction could begin as soon as 2010.
