Kroger redesigns supermarket in downtown Grosse Pointe

Trader Joe's coming to downtown Grosse Pointe is paying off in more ways than one for the inner ring suburb. Not only did the specialty market bring its coveted reputation to a once-empty building, it's prompted their competitors to bring their A game. Kroger plans to renovate and expand its store a little more than a block down the road from the Trader Joe's.

"The city has been working with Kroger on developing a plan for its new store for more than a year," says Peter Dame, city manager for Grosse Pointe. "A new attractive Kroger store in the Village will be a welcome addition."

Kroger plans to double the square footage of its store at the corner of Kercheval and Notre Dame by adding a second floor. The supermarket also is proposing to build a 177-space parking garage on a surface lot behind it.

Designs for the new structure show a spiffy brick and stone exterior that complements the rest of the traditional architecture in downtown Grosse Pointe.

City officials are currently reviewing the expansion proposal and expect to begin holding public hearings on the project later this winter.
