Four new businesses help transform downtown Ferndale

A quartet of new businesses is helping to enliven downtown Ferndale by bringing much needed staples (and a splash of natural beauty) to the area.

"We have so many businesses coming in that are customer-service oriented," says Maile Ilac Boeder, executive director of the Ferndale Chamber of Commerce.

The Ferndale Pharmacy will host a grand opening at its new location on 825 W. Nine Mile Road, a few blocks west of Woodward Avenue, on Tuesday. The pharmacy will offer one more option for downtown area residents and pedestrians to pickup basic essentials without using a car.

On Woodward a pair of new businesses is opening up on the 23300 block. The Illumined Heart Light Center moves from Royal Oak to Ferndale, and offers traditional and alternative health remedies. Right next door will be a Farmers Insurance branch scheduled to open its doors at the same time.

But the business that is making one of the biggest impressions is the new Blumz location on East 9 Mile Road. The well-regarded florist recently relocated its 8 Mile location to downtown Ferndale (it's still maintaining its downtown Detroit store), a few blocks east of Woodward Avenue.

The new store has 10,000 square feet of space, which is three times bigger than his previous location. The owner decided to make the move to have more space while tapping into Ferndale's ample foot traffic. A grand opening is scheduled for later this spring.
