Crofoot building in downtown Pontiac expands offerings to art shows

Just when you think they're gonna zig, they zag...

Pontiac
's Crofoot Building gets cultural this weekend, offering up the venues very first art show/music performance at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The art opening, presented by Wyandotte's River's Edge Gallery, features the work of Amy Chenier, a well known painter in commercial sports circles. Depicting the raw emotion of sports, Chenier's paintings hang in the offices of Comerica Park and the private collection of former Detroit Red Wing Sergei Fedorov.

Her latest work is expanding into 20th Century America, incorporating the theories of well-known and virtually unknown philosophers, scientists and musicians. One of Chenier's latest painting, Rasta-Darwin, is of Charles Darwin and shows Darwin in dreadlocks. The paintings will be accompanied by performances by rock group Pinback and the nerdcore rap of MC Chris, a regular contributor to the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

The Crofoot, 1 South Saginaw St., found new life earlier this fall as a concert venue. Local preservationist Blair McGowan, who has rehabbed a number of historic downtown Pontiac structures including Clutch Cargo's, brought it back to life after the city had condemned the 19th Century Building about two years ago.

The expansion of offerings to art shows is expected to help solidify the 1,000-person venue at Saginaw and Pike streets as an arts center for not only Pontiac but Metro Detroit. That will give it one more reason to exist after a long history of ups and near demolitions.
