Workers have finished exterior renovations on the old Armstrong Building in downtown Wyandotte and are preparing to begin interior renovations.
Merrill Lynch is spending a little more than $1 million to restore the old two-story building at the corner of Biddle Avenue and Oak Street as its new offices. About 12 Merrill Lynch employees are set to move into the building upon completion, which is planned for July 1.
The Cultural and Historical Commission has applauded renovations to the two-story building, which was originally constructed as the Arlington Hotel in the 1880s. Over the years it changed hands and became, among other things, a speakeasy. The Armstrong Men’s Clothing Store occupied it from the 1950s to the mid 1990s. Since then it had fallen into disrepair, including a failing roof.
Merrill Lynch began renovating it last year, turning it into 6,400 square feet of Class A office space with 16-foot ceilings.
