Birmingham's Principal Shopping District has prepared a retail analysis
that concludes the district needs to add more national retail to its
mix to reverse a trend of less local residents considering it to be
their primary shopping destination.

PSD Executive Director John Heiney said the district can reverse the trend by focusing on what it does well - entertainment and dining - and expanding things the district lacks, such as national retailers. He's been in negotiations for years with companies such as cookware and home furnishings store Sur La Table and Roche Bobois, an upscale home furnishings store.
He is confident that such stores would add to Birmingham's mix of 297 retail establishments. "There's a reason why Oakland County, and particularly Birmingham, has so much retail: It's our demographics," Heiney said.
