Northville is focusing on improving and expanding its parking options in its city center to help prevent downtown patrons from stalking local parking lots for spaces.
This summer the city will start a multi-year program to improve and expand its downtown parking facilities. For now that just means renovating and repaving several of downtown's surface parking lots. City officials plan to upgrade the parking lot directly east and north of Main Street Bank at the northeast corner of East Main and Hutton streets this summer.
However, in the future that could lead to plans for a multi-deck parking structure. City officials hope the improvements will make downtown safer for pedestrians and motorists alike while maximizing the total number of parking spaces, valuable commodities in busy downtowns. In the long-term, the idea is the program will lead to more investment and development downtown.
