Ann Arbor is applying for a $50,000 state grant to install a solar-electric system at Farmer’s Market.
The city’s
Downtown Development Authority is proposing to install a 10-kilowatt solar-panel system on top of the market during its planned renovation in 2008. The new solar roofs are expected to lower the overall costs of the renovation and increase its quality. It is also expected to reduce electric costs at the Farmer’s Market. The location has good solar access and is highly visible in one of the city’s most popular destinations. An educational component would also be added to teach the public about the value of solar energy.
The city, which would provide a $50,000 match, is looking to partner with Auburn Hills-based United Solar Ovonics and Kerrytown Market on the project. Kerrytown has agreed to purchase excess electricity generated by the solar system.
Earlier this year, Ann Arbor started a campaign to promote renewable energy by moving all its facilities to 30% renewable energy by 2010.
