Ferndale-based web designer Son Tran is serious about food. He runs the food blog,
singleguychef, and is one of the few brave souls who've taken on the new trend of organizing underground "restaurant" dinners – where a table of mostly friends are treated to a gourmet bonanza for a small fee. Or is it more legal to call it a gift?
Going out to eat with Son is wonderful, especially if you just follow his lead. He knows what to order. He's right. Just say, "I'll have what he's having."
In Ferndale he swears by
Assaggi Mediterranean Bistro where owners Josie and George regularly bring in vintners and host wine tastings that are reasonably priced. He's partial to the pear and blue cheese pizza and really appreciates their seasonal menu offerings. Occasionally he'll drop by
Sakana for sushi. Although the rice is not always as consistent as he'd like it, "they serve up some outstanding mackerel." Who knew?
In the summertime he likes to sit outside at the
WAB (Woodward Avenue Brewery). It's not fancy, but he goes for the brews and the people. Their half-off-food Monday nights draw a regular crowd.
Brunch and lunch are a toss up. Son picks the
Flytrap for good cuisine overall, especially brunch. He favors the pho – a bowl noodles in a beautifully seasoned broth, his served with tofu and extra peppers. He will opt for
Toast for the scene and the seasonal menu items. It's a popular place and lines are often out the door. For coffee or a quick lunch Son recommends
AJs, a café that has fast wireless and live music some evenings. He suggests trying the Cubano.
For shopping, Son recommends
Naka, where owner Kelly Pettibone carries local artist pieces. Although it's largely geared toward women, Son likes the small but eclectic mix for guys including unique ties, watches, wallets and rings. He visits for himself but also notes that it's "a great place for gifts for the girlfriend."
For clothing Son and "more shopping for the girlfriend," he crosses the street to
House of Chants for mid-range priced fashion options such as Diesel.
To relax and rejuvenate, Son recommends
Green Leaf Bodywork, a local spa opened by Charity Albright. "The massages are great."
