KVCC launches Mechatronics Academy in August

When you bring together mechanical, electrical and computer technologies you get mechatronics. Beginning in August Kalamazoo Valley Community College will offer training in the field that integrates all three technologies.

The new academy is designed to make sure that graduating students have the knowledge and skills essential to perform troubleshooting, service, and repair on automated industrial systems.

“In today’s manufacturing environment, these disciplines are combined into a mechatronics systems approach for resolving problems,” says Lesa Strausbaugh, Director of Career Academies.

The Mechatronic Academy, set to begin Aug. 20, is now accepting applications. There will be an information session on the new academy at 4 p.m. June 27 at the Groves Center of Kalamazoo Valley Community College, 7107 Elm Valley Drive, Kalamazoo. The 18-week, full-time training program will prepare students for careers in automated industrial equipment maintenance and repair.

Students will be taught on devices that simulate automated production manufacturing in which fluid, robotic and electronic control are used. Students will learn routine service, how to use monitoring tools, how to troubleshoot problems and make necessary repairs. They will participate in lab exercises, simulation and self-directed projects.

Applicants will be screened to make sure graduates can meet the hiring requirements of employers once they have completed the program. Applicants must demonstrate mechanical or electrical experience and the ability to work with mathematical concepts. To complete the program an understanding of lean manufacturing and quality control systems will be demonstrated.
