Tantrick Brewing Co. is expanding into downtown Allegan with a $134,000 investment in a downtown Allegan facility at 134 Water St. Lakeshore Advantage, the local economic development organization that assists employers with growth opportunities in Ottawa and Allegan counties, worked with the company to connect it with local resources.
“I cannot be happier that Tantrick Brewing Co. is relocating to Downtown Allegan. Since opening its doors in July 2018, Tantrick has impacted this community in all the right ways,” says Tim Perrigo, executive director of the Allegan Area Chamber of Commerce.
The owners, he says, have “worked tirelessly to create the type of ‘third space’ that all communities desire – inviting, comfortable, and neighborly.”
“We started out as first-time business owners renting a space just outside of Allegan, not knowing what to expect. In three short years, we have grown with the support of our neighbors and are proud to invest in the community we have come to love with our new, permanent home for Tantrick Brewing Co.” owner Tanya Schafer says. “It is very humbling and exciting to join the other small businesses working hard to revitalize Allegan's downtown.”
Independent of the 134 Water Street project, the microbrewery is also renovating the former Long Branch Saloon at 243 Hubbard St. and converting it into a taproom and restaurant.
“The brewery is a destination that attracts visitors from all of Southwest Michigan and beyond, providing an introduction to Allegan as an anchor of our social district and driving customers to other retailers, attractions, and restaurants,” says Allegan City Manager Joel Dye. “Tantrick Brewing Co. is a vital component to the many good things happening in Allegan. It is going to be great to have them downtown on the riverfront.”
Tantrick Brewing Co. is an up-and-coming microbrewery currently operating a small production facility and taproom at 633 114th Ave. in the city of Allegan. The company has outgrown the leased location and will redevelop 2,110 square-feet at 134 Water St., expanding their local production capacity and operations.
“Food and beverage processing is one of our region’s top manufacturing industries, and nearly one in three jobs in our region is in manufacturing,” Lakeshore Advantage president Jennifer Owens says.
Tantrick’s expansion, she says, will contribute to the growth of downtown Allegan and the “heartbeat and personality of the city’s redevelopment.”
The city of Allegan approved a 12-year Industrial Facilities Tax Exemption for the micro-brewery to help offset redevelopment costs. The building at 134 Water St. will be used by Tantrick Brewing Co. solely for the production and processing of alcoholic beverages, which enabled their qualification for the tax abatement.
In 2019, Lakeshore Advantage supported 21 business growth projects, resulting in $127 million in private investment and 1,000 new jobs. For details, visit
