Summer events at the library aren’t just for kids. Herrick District Library has numerous arts and crafts events aimed at adults this summer.
Everyone who walks into the Herrick District Library North Branch is greeted by a sign welcoming them in 11 languages. It lets visitors know that no matter where they’re from, the library staff is glad they’re there. The North Branch will conduct two classes for adults to make their own welcome signs 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at the HDL North Branch, 155 Riley St.
Participants can design an inviting sign to welcome guests into your own home. One per household. Registration is required at
herrickdl.org/events.
At the main library, four events invite the public onto the lower patio for a relaxing morning of soft conversation and casual sketching. The library will provide paper and pencils. All skill levels are welcome. No registration is necessary.
• Sketch Herbs and Flowers
Wednesdays, July 20 and August 24
9:30-10:30 a.m.
• Free Sketch in the Garden

The library is also hosting two take and make crafts for adults — citronella candles and DIY mini-libraries.
Adults may register for either kit at
herrickdl.org/events. Registration for the candle kits opens July 4. (Pick up is during library hours Monday, July 18-Saturday, July 23.) The mini-library kit includes all the supplies needed to make a desktop library out of paper, wood, and an aluminum tin. Registration for the mini-libraries opens Aug. 1. (Pick up is Monday, Aug. 15-Saturday, Aug. 20.)
And, of course, the library’s annual summer reading challenge is open to all ages.
Kids and adults alike can sign up for HDL’s Summer Reading Challenge and earn rewards for reading and completing joy-filled activities built to help celebrate and appreciate the season. Participants may participate virtually through the Beanstack app or can pick up a printed chart at HDL. All those who complete the challenge will win a prize, including a free book of their choice.
