Hudsonville's growth spurs Holland Hospital to open downtown primary care facility

Hudsonville’s steady growth has prompted Holland Hospital to open its new primary care facility, Holland Hospital Primary Care-Hudsonville, in the Ottawa County community's downtown.

The hospital celebrated the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Jan. 9, followed by an open house and tours of the facility, 3440 Chicago Drive, Suite 105, in Hudsonville.

The state-of-the-art 6,500-square-foot facility offers a range of services, including primary care providers, same-day appointments, walk-in lab and X-ray services, and in-office mammography in a comfortable, modern setting.

The new facility will offer “residents convenient access to primary care and advanced diagnostic services,” says Michael Pawlak, vice president of regional development at Holland Hospital.

The hospital’s investment in the city comes as the community is growing. Hudsonville Mayor Mark Northrup says a year from now, 500 more people will live downtown, including in the new residences above the Holland Hospital facility.

“Access to quality health care is fundamental to a thriving city, and having Holland Hospital invest here speaks volumes about their commitment to the well-being of our residents,” Northup says This facility represents hope, health, and a brighter future for our families and neighbors.”

Hudsonville’s population is growing by 1% annually and is now nearing 8,000 residents. The city is one of the fastest-growing communities in Ottawa County, which has led Michigan’s 10 largest counties in population growth, increasing by 2.18% since 2020. The growth has also increased demand for local health care options.

Array of services

The new facility includes:
  • 11 exam rooms and one procedure room.
  • Consultation spaces for care managers, diabetes educators, and behavioral health specialists.
  • Mammography with advanced stand-alone breast care screening technology.
  • Ultrasound services by appointment.
  • Walk-in lab and X-ray services.
“Our experienced team is dedicated to delivering compassionate and comprehensive care,” says Sam Harris, director of physician practice operations-primary care at Holland Hospital. “This facility is thoughtfully designed to meet the evolving needs of the Hudsonville community, ensuring convenient local access to high-quality health care.”

The primary care team includes Dr. Mary Mier, DO, and physician assistants Jennifer Bienz and Lauren Douma, all accepting new patients.

“This is a state-of-the-art facility designed to fit the growing needs of the community,” says Mier. “We’re here to provide comprehensive care for all ages, including annual physicals, well-child visits, immunizations, allergy and asthma management, chronic condition care, and wellness education.”

Holland Hospital's new office also helps address Michigan’s shortage of primary care providers, improving access to care and reducing wait times. According to the Graham Center for Policy Studies, Michigan will need 862 additional primary care physicians by 2030 to meet demand.

A century of excellence

Holland Hospital has served West Michigan for over a century, with locations in Holland, Zeeland, Grand Haven, Saugatuck/Douglas, and South Haven.

“This facility demonstrates our mission of providing convenient, local access to high-quality healthcare throughout Ottawa County,” says Harris.

Holland Hospital consistently earns top accolades, including a 5-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and recognition in the top 5% nationally for Outstanding Patient Experience for 16 consecutive years.

“(Holland Hospital’s) dedication to providing exceptional health care will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on our community,” says Northrup. “This investment truly highlights Hudsonville as a city worth investing in.”
