Grand Haven's Grand Landing could finally land a hotel

The original Planned Development approval for Grand Landing in 2006 called for a hotel.

In mid-2024, Sylvan Lake-based Elite Hospitality came before the Grand Haven Planning Commission to announce renewed interest in creating a hotel on the site.

Elite Hospitality is familiar with the West Michigan hotel market and owns and operates the Holiday Inn in Spring Lake.
 
At the Grand Landing site at the intersection of US 31 and Adams Street, Elite Hospitality has proposed a 131-room Hilton hotel complex, including a Hampton Inn and Home 2 Suites.

There will be different approaches to what a guest would be interested in. They believe there’s a market for that,” Grand Haven City Planner Brian Urquhart says.

The city will take into account traffic, parking, sidewalks, and other considerations, he says.

Try, try again

The latest iteration of the proposed building shifted its footprint to capitalize on riverfront views.

The development could receive zoning change approval as early as Jan. 21.  Elite Hospitality would have to come back to the Planning Commission next month for final site plan approval.

The site has gone through various plans, beginning with a residential hotel and regional hub with conference center in 2006. Plans were scaled back, but the idea remained that some type of hotel would be developed there.

Phases

Then Elite Hospitality came before the planning commission last year with adjustments.

A four-story 100-room extended-stay hotel would be the first phase to be built.

Plans do not initially include an onsite restaurant. However, an outlot is being eyed for a stand-alone eatery.

Elite Hospitality is expected to present a finalized plan early this year with a goal to break ground later in the year or early 2026.

Although initial plans called for a $9 million to $11 million investment, updated numbers are not available.
