Take a free Zumba class as part of Music Moves Us

Evergreen Commons, a community center dedicated to individuals aged 55 and older, offers an extensive range of group fitness classes. With more than 50 classes weekly, the center features everything from Pilates and yoga to cardio drumming, helping its members lead more vibrant lives.

In August, Evergreen Commons will open one of its most popular classes, Zumba Gold, to the public for a free lesson. This event is part of the Holland Symphony Orchestra’s Music Moves Us week of activities.

The class, led by Amy Vande Poel, Evergreen’s director of physical wellness, will be held on Friday, Aug. 9, from 10:15 to 11:00 a.m. in the auditorium of the senior center, 480 State St., Holland.

The free Zumba Gold lesson is one of 10 Music Moves Us events happening in Holland from Aug. 6-10. These events encompass a variety of music and dance experiences, including salsa, hip hop, and big band swing dance lessons, culminating in the symphony’s “Music Unites Us – Brazil!” program at Kollen Park on Aug. 10.

Open to all ages

In a special twist, the Zumba class will be a multigenerational session, with Evergreen Commons members encouraged to bring their grandchildren and friends. Typically, this class is part of Evergreen Commons’ fitness membership, which costs $35 a month, although the fee is covered for those using Silver Sneakers.

“It’s a great cardiovascular workout,” says Vande Poel, who has been teaching the class at Evergreen Commons since 2007. “So it's great for your stamina, but also your cognitive health.”

Deb Thompson, a longtime participant, agrees.

"It's a fun way to get a great workout," says Thompson. "I had a stroke five years ago and I specifically do this because it helps my brain. I really liked doing it, but it's intentional."

Participants are advised to wear comfortable, cool clothing and sneakers.

Vande Poel notes the broader benefits of group fitness classes, observing that participants often maintain greater functional ability and independence compared to their peers who do not engage in such activities.

“You can see that they're staying independent longer, many have been active class participants for 10 plus years” she says. “These Group fitness classes combat isolation because the participants create connections in these classes. They're very socially driven. Participants often meet outside Evergreen too, and even travel together.”
