Michigan ranks among a handful of states seeing economic expansion and job growth, and two Lakeshore employers played a significant role in this recognition. The state received a prestigious Shovel Award from Area Development Magazine.
Gentex in Zeeland and LG Energy Solution Michigan in Holland have been instrumental in promoting economic development in the state, contributing to the success of several key initiatives.
The annual
Shovel Awards recognize states that successfully attract high-value investment projects, creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. Michigan was recognized for its outstanding efforts in these areas, particularly in the manufacturing sector, where it has attracted a number of new projects and created many new jobs. States submitted a maximum of 12 projects. LG Energy Solution and Gentex were presented as top-12 projects and directly contributed to Michigan receiving the award.
West Michigan roots keep growing
“We are proud to continue to grow our roots in Michigan,” says Neil Boehm, chief technology officer of Gentex and chair of the Lakeshore Advantage board of directors. “We feel fortunate to have access to a rich talent pipeline, robust infrastructure, and the resources to expand our global business here. With our facility expansions in West Michigan, we will be able to continue to leverage our core competencies as well as utilize emerging technologies to respond to the changing industries we are active in.”
Lakeshore Advantage has been a driving force behind the economic growth in Ottawa and Allegan counties, the first- and fourth-fastest growing counties in the state of Michigan over the last 10 years. The economic development organization works closely with state and local partners to promote investment and job creation. The contributions of Gentex in Ottawa County and LG Energy Solution in Allegan County have been particularly significant in this regard. The two companies’ expansion projects announced last year are estimated to create a combined 1,700 jobs.
The $1.7 billion LG Energy Solution Michigan expansion in Holland was ranked as the third biggest project announced in 2022. The $300 million Gentex expansion came in on sixth on the list.
"We are thrilled to see the state of Michigan receive this prestigious award, and we are proud to have played a part in its success," says Jennifer Owens, president of Lakeshore Advantage. "The award underscores West Michigan’s lakeshore as an inviting place for industrial business expansion."
