June 1-15 along the Lakeshore: Pride celebrations, farmers markets, concert series, and more

Following its informal welcome on Memorial Day weekend, summer officially arrives in June, bringing plenty of reasons to get outside and enjoy a Pure Michigan adventure. There is so much to do along the Lakeshore in June that we are publishing two Things To Do columns this month.

Below are the events for June 1-15. Events scheduled in the first half of this month in Allegan, Muskegon, and Ottawa counties include cooking lessons and art festivals, along with a concert and a musical. This list includes options for everyone, regardless of age, ability, or interest. 

Summer Cooking Classes

Every Wednesday and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Fresh produce, flowers, bread, artisan cheeses and chocolates, and other yummy treats abound. A true feast for your tummies, your eyes, and your families.

Saugatuck Farmers Market
Saugatuck Center for the Arts, 400 Culver St., Saugatuck
Fridays (9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) and Tuesdays (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
Nothing says fun like a farmers market, and Saugatuck does it right. Besides the usual array of fresh produce, honey, and flowers, you will also be treated to live music, food to go from local vendors, and a cash bar.

Community Pride events (June 1-5)

Saugatuck and Douglas celebrate Community Pride in style with a variety of events sure to pique your interest. Scheduled events include:

Parade of Homes

National Trails Day
Saugatuck-Douglas-Laketown Scramble
Begins at Saugatuck/Douglas Welcome Center, 95 Blue Star Highway, Douglas
June 4, 1-4 p.m.
Stop by the Saugatuck/Douglas Welcome Center between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to pick up your trail card, then head to any of the designated trailheads to have your card stamped. With three stamps, you are automatically eligible for special deals at area merchants. Get six stamps and you can participate in a drawing for special prizes. See the website for details.

The Bloomin’ Art Show and Garden Tour

Gypsy Goddess Festival
Allegan County Fairgrounds, 150 Douglas St., Allegan

Ticket prices vary based on events.
Looking for a “different” way to spend a weekend, then check out the Gypsy Goddess Festival, with music and dance, food, free yoga, and workshops/seminars. Van Dyk Mortgage Summer Concert Series

Two concerts, two music genres. Get your groove on June 4 with a free reggae festival featuring five bands, including the lead band, the Bumpin’ Uglies.
