Holland Hospital and Hope College partner to elevate athletic care

Holland Hospital and Hope College athletics are partnering to provide comprehensive athletic training and physical therapy services for all Hope College student-athletes.

Beginning this academic year, Hope College’s 720 athletes will be able to access  athletic trainers, physical therapists and the latest advancements in sports medicine through the Holland Hospital and Shoreline Orthopaedics Sports Medicine collaborative.

“Holland Hospital and Shoreline Orthopaedics are proud to partner with Hope College to support the health and well-being of its athletes,” says Patti VanDort, CEO of Holland Hospital. “Our commitment to providing nationally recognized care was among the top reasons Hope chose our hospital for this partnership. We look forward to working together to enhance the athletic experience for all involved.”

Hope’s athletes will also have access to a new orthopedic center opening in November. Located in Zeeland, the 40,000-square-foot facility will provide access to orthopedic surgeons, physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians, outpatient physical therapy, and "return-to-sport" rehabilitation services.

The facility includes a 19,000-square-foot outpatient surgery center featuring four operating rooms, two of which will be used upon opening, two procedure rooms, 16 post-anesthesia and recovery stations, a 15,000-square-foot orthopedic clinic, and a 5,000-square-foot outpatient rehabilitation service.

Enhanced partnership

“We are excited to partner with Hope College to provide exceptional care for their student-athletes,” says Dr. Bruce Stewart, of Shoreline Orthopaedics. “We have been working together for years and are happy to take our relationship in an even more coordinated and comprehensive direction.”

Tim Schoonveld, Hope College director of athletics, welcomes the agreement with the school’s longtime partners.

“Over the years, we have worked closely with both organizations to meet the needs of our student-athletes,” he says. “This formalized partnership will provide us with additional resources that enhance what we can do within our athletic training and physical therapy areas. Our student-athletes will be the beneficiaries of this partnership.”

Amanda Felton, athletic training coordinator at Holland Hospital, calls the partnership a game-changer for Hope’s athletes.

“Having access to the sports medicine collaborative means faster recovery times, better injury prevention, and ultimately, stronger and healthier student-athletes,” she says.

Hope College, a Division III member of the NCAA, is part of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The college fields 22 varsity teams.
