Harvest Fest brings community together for ninth year
How to cultivate healthy communities through local food will be one of the themes of this year’s Southwest Michigan Community Harvest Fest.
The ninth annual festival presented by Fair Food Matters takes place from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at Tillers International in Scotts.
Information on good food, good nutrition and sustainable living are all part of the event, says Paul Stermer, executive director of Fair Food Matters. Keynote speaker Patty Cantrell of Regional Food Solutions LLC will speak on healthy communities and local food.
In the family tent, activities include performances by Dunuya Drum and Dance Ensemble, mask-making, face-painting, a pocket petting zoo, and workshops on creating oil pastel flower gardens and tissue paper butterflies.
For entertainment, four bands are scheduled to perform. Whiskey Before Breakfast will present traditional Irish music, Mystic Dub with its reggae/roots rock/dancehall sounds, Deep Fried Pickle Project will play jug band/hokum/honky-tonk, and the Electric Jug Band there will be traditional music featuring wash-tub bass, talking drum, pots and pans.
Local food vendors, exhibitors and demonstrations also will be part of the daylong event.
Fair Food Matters works to improve community health, empower women, support small businesses, fight obesity and diabetes, alleviate hunger, prevent racism, revitalize neighborhoods, foster youth development and increase academic achievement through local food.
