Media: Jobs Landed

Inspired by listening to “All Things Considered” and “Morning Edition” on National Public Radio, I entered the world of broadcast journalist in December 1979. I have been on radio and television in Detroit ever since then: radio news anchor, member of morning radio teams, TV news anchor and reporter (both street/hard news reporting and feature reporting). Currently I am the host of my own talk and interview show on Michigan Radio, “Stateside with Cynthia Canty”. It is modeled after “All Things Considered” and “Talk of the Nation”, with a focus on stories and people from and about Michigan. Over my nearly 33 years in broadcasting, I have had a front-row seat for countless stories and had the pleasure of interviewing so many different people. Telling stories is what this job is all about. I love bringing stories to my listeners and viewers!?

I have always been able to effortlessly develop a good rapport with people around me, so it comes as a natural fit that I work in public service at the AADL!  Libraries are an asset to us now more than ever, so being able to help patrons find and disseminate information and resources that we offer is very important to me.  My time is also being spent as an intern with CTN, our public-access TV station here in town.  I am providing support to their programming department, and would like to use my talents to contribute interviews with local citizens.  Finally, I have also done interviews with authors and filmmakers through MTTV, a new media company that wants to help grow the community of Highland Park, MI by staging concernts, events and festivals, with all of us providing the coverage.  Most of my work with them has been put on hold while they re-structure and move their offices.  Since graduating, I have learned to wear many hats to survive and gain experience.  My main goal is to work in sports broadcasting, and/or in athletic media relations.  Persistence and positivity are some of the hardest things to maintain, but I know that with my talent and determination, I can achieve what I want to do!

Everyday from 4 till 7, I am the local anchor of All Things Considered, NPR's flagship program for more than 40 years. I guide our listeners through through the day's national and local news, arts & culture features, as well as regular weather and traffic updates. From political scandals and ongoing state legislation  to Detroit's breaking bands, businesses and quirky cultural features, we tell stories that matter and effect the lives of all who listen, from Ann Arbor and Port Huron to Flint to London, Ontario.

I recently joined the Comcast Government Affairs team as a Government Affairs Associate.  In my new role I support federal, state and local government relations activities statewide.  I also research, monitor and analyze relevant regulatory and policy issues impacting the organization.

I am in charge of the web and print publication as well as all digital marketing (SEO, e-blasts, social networking, etc.). I also teach for the Graphic Design Technology Department at Washtenaw Community College. I teach both Photoshop Graphics and InDesign for Print Publications.

I help with the day-to-day operations of running a small business, coordinate assignments to employees and interns as well as, write stories, take photos and produce video for the Ypsilanti Citizen.

I manage corporate accounts for underwriting support of Michigan Radio. I present and propose support to new and existing accounts.  I also write copy for the on-air spots, finalize underwriting schedules and write the agreements.

I'm one of three partners in the company, as well as five freelance writers, who cover news and events in the Ypsilanti area. We write, take photos and post video to our Website. The Citizen uses social networking and other Web-based tools to distribute and update people on what is going on. The site also offers a comprehensive community calendar to keep people informed on happenings around town. The Citizen is ad-supported, and can be read in print through our partnership with EMU's student-run independent paper the Eastern Echo.

I took the position as the first web developer for AnnArbor.com because of the fantastic opportunity to be apart of a community driven project that has an amazing amount of potential.  I will be designing and implementing new features for the community to utilize.  To better allow me to do this, will be working closely with the community in the AnnArbor.com downstairs office which is open to the public.  We encourage people to walk in off the street and have a conversation with us about what Ann Arbor means to them.  I will be working in that office every week on a few designated days so that i may talk one on one with anyone who has question, comments, or concerns about the website.

I'm very excited about what AnnArbor.com will become with the help of the community.

I joined MLive.com as East MI Retail Account Executive the end of March 2009.  I began my career in digital advertising in 2002, and worked on the agency side of business for just over 5 years as a Digital Planner & Buyer on various local and national accounts.  My last 2+ years have been spent on the Digital Sales side of business for NBC Universal, and now MLive.com.  The focus of my position with MLive.com is to increase advertising revenue with Retail accounts across East MI.

In October 2008, I joined MLive.com as Marketing Manager in Ann Arbor where my advertising career began 10 years ago at Harris Marketing Group. Two main goals for my position are to grow online audience and increase advertising revenue.  I have also worked on each of the Big Three accounts at the following advertising agencies: Ford Motor Media, PHD Detroit and GM Planworks (now Starcom Mediavest or SMV).  I served on the Adcraft PM Committee from 2002 to 2005.

As a creative services producer for MLive, I create and maintain advertising materials for local and national businesses.  I'm also responsible for classifieds administration for the Western half of the state.

I cover business issues in the Ann Arbor region and the Michigan economy, including alternative energy, automotive, biotechnology, venture capital, advanced manufacturing, information technology, aerospace and engineering. I write and post daily stories online and weekly analytical stories in print. I also publish regular blog posts, occasional video, photos, columns and Twitter updates. I also appear regularly on business radio programs - particularly to discuss Michigan's alternative energy industry and the auto crisis.

I handle day to day operations.  My current responsibilities include publisher, creative director, marketing, and community relations.  Currently we are working on a new product called uSurvive that will launch in July at 18 colleges and universities throughout Michigan and Ohio.  Basically uSurvive is a "survival guide" that helps students navigate college life through print, web, and video.  The pocket sized print version is a phone directory like tool with coupons and a planner in the back.  The online version rewards students for their interaction (blogging, posting pics and video) through uPoints which can be redeemed for prizes like concert tickets, scholarship money, or even planting a tree.
