Engineering: Jobs Landed

As a project engineer, I provide environmental engineering support for a wide range of water issues including stormwater control, watershed management, water quality modeling, and water quality regulations.

My job involves both research and teaching activities on the subject of Operations Research and Optimization. We abstract data from a range of real-world applications, and model decision making problems using mathematical programming tools. For instance, you can think of an optimization problem arising in personal financial management, in which one needs to design an investment portfolio. A mathematical model seeks an optimal solution that tells an investor the amount and the time for selling and purchasing each investment option, such that the overall expected return over a period of time is maximized. Such a model can be applied not only to financial applications, but to model practical problems in health care, military, transportation, public policy, and so on. Thanks to the University, Ann Arbor is a great place that gathers many professionals from a variety of industries, and offers great opportunities for me to cooperate with other people and apply my theoretical findings. I love my role as a researcher and a teacher, and really hope that my work can contribute to make a better society and to inspire younger generations to pursue a career in math and technology.

I work on a variety of projects designing and developing usable interfaces for both Web and software applications.  Because I work at a small company I tend to do a lot of different things, whether it is making a 16x16 pixel icon, a full screen splash, designing a Web page or coding the HTML and JavaScript of an application.  Being at a research company is pretty neat because it gives me a chance to work on things that aren't out there in the market and work on new and exciting technology.

I build computer models of power grids and then analyze their performance under varying scenarios.  This involves evaluating power delivery capabilities, power routing, power plant coordination, and grid and substation protection and fault recovery.

SimuQuest is a small, fast-moving embedded systems company full of fun and interesting engineers that are the best at what they do.  Our office is right on Main Street and close to the Washtenaw Dairy.  This means ready access to great lunches and even better donuts!  Ultimately, our goal is to support the design of embedded systems in a whole new way using graphical models instead of implementing them by hand.  It's a powerful technology that we truly believe will revolutionize the way this type of software is designed and implemented for automotive, robotics, aerospace, medical devices, and beyond.

I lead the effort to design and evolve SimuQuest's growing product line.  I am responsible for turning customer needs into new products and new features within existing products, delivering them to market on time, and aiding in designing a pricing, sales, and marketing strategy to promote these new capabilities.

The best thing about my job is the wide range of responsibilities that constantly challenges me to keep growing as a professional.  I spend time on the road and at home in front of prospective customers and leading training sessions.  Some days, however, the team and I are all in front of whiteboards figuring out what is going to be developed, by whom, by when, and what it's going to look like.  Occasionally, you might even find me working on new artwork for our products.  I also participate in sales and marketing activities and am involved in developing new business relationships.

As Business Development Manager, I coordinate the development and public relations efforts for a series of non-profit technology conferences and publications. This includes: Building and maintaining relationships with existing and potential event participants and presenters; Recruiting new donors for membership program; Managing internal and external communications for events; Writing proposals and clear, compelling content for inclusion in promotional and event materials; Maintaining donor and participant databases.
