Walk and Bike Lansing! is a coalition on a mission to double the amount of trips that are taken by foot and bike in Lansing over the next five years. The group also wants to reduce non-motorized accidents by 20 percent per year and eliminate bike and
pedestrian related fatalities.
Now that the group has established its goals, it’s reaching out to 150 to 160 groups, businesses and civic organizations to publicize the movement.
Jessica Yorko, with the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council, says the group wants community involvement. They want to see how they can work with the community to achieve this goal.
“We need to talk about where we want more sidewalks, where we want more trails and where we want more bike lanes,” she says.
The group will host four workshops in the spring to gather public opinion about the project and create a network of supporters.
“The more people who walk and bike, the less people get hit,” Yorko says. “This is because it’s a culture of awareness.”
If motorists are used to looking for and respecting non-motorized transportation, they will pay closer attention and this will reduce the incidences of accidents.
