Surplus Store Earns MSU Campus First LEED Gold Certification

The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the Michigan State University Surplus Store and Recycling Center with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design gold certification.

This is the first building at MSU that has earned gold certification. The Kellogg Biological Station dairy facility and the chemistry building addition earned LEED silver certification.

The center has several green components, including recycled green glass mixed into the concrete surrounding the building; rooftop solar panels which produce 10 percent of the building's electricity; and rainwater collection that provides 60 percent of filtered gray water for toilets, urinals and power washers.

"I was very excited because all along we were striving for silver certification," says Chris Burns, construction manager for the project. Earning the gold certification, he says, "validated all the extra efforts we put into the project as a team. We couldn't have achieved it without each group stepping up and playing a role in the project."
