Photographer Melissa Keeley started shooting weddings with other photographers as a part-time gig while living in Columbus, Ohio. In August 2008, she moved to Lansing, decided to create her own job and launched her own photography business, Telltale Photography, in January 2009.
Keeley works from her Westside Lansing home, but travels throughout the region to shoot weddings and portraits.
“I’m lucky in that I’m in an industry that’s going to exist regardless of the economy,” she says. “Everyone’s always going to want wedding photographs and it kind of fits a niche market for people who really value a storytelling element in photography.”
Word about Keeley’s work is spreading and she has already booked several shoots for 2010.
“I’ve absolutely seen some growth,” she says. “It took about six to seven months to meet people and get established as a business, but about three-to-four months ago things just really started taking off and I’ve been very busy this fall.”
