East Lansing Launches New Bike Sharing Program For City Employees

City of East Lansing employees can now bike to and from lunches, meetings and other business-related activities with the launch of a new employee bike sharing program.

A local bike advocacy organization, Share-A-Bike, donated eight bikes of varying sizes to the new program, which was designed to encourage healthy activity among employees, while also improving air quality in the community through the reduction of carbon emissions.

“We need to be creative in developing ways of cutting costs, lessening our dependence on foreign oil and reducing pollution,” says Dave Smith of the East Lansing Green Task Force. “This is a small step which accomplishes all three and has the potential to positively impact employee fitness as well.”

This pilot program was modeled after similar programs in Austin, TX, and Edmonton, Canada, and is now in East Lansing due to the work of the Green Task Force, which promotes and encourages a more sustainable community.

“The program will decrease car trips taken by our employees. It's a creative, fun and innovative program that we hope will be a model for other communities in the region,” adds Smith.
