Pledges for federal recovery act funds were doled out to Michigan arts groups July 10 in the interest of preserving jobs. There were three recipients in the Capitol region.
Money flowing through the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA) went to Michigan State University (MSU), the Williamston Theatre and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing.
The Williamston Theatre received $14,7000 to pay an artistic director and a managing director. The Arts Council of Greater Lansing got $13,875 for three positions: an educator, a grant administrator and a business manager.
Michigan State University (MSU) received $50,000 in recovery funds directly from the National Endowment for the Arts to be used for folk and traditional arts.
Overall, the MCACA recovery funds went to 37 arts and cultural institutions in Michigan, said to preserve more than 140 jobs in 21 counties.
“Our struggling economy has really hit nonprofit arts and cultural organizations hard and any support we can offer will be a help,” says John Bracey, director of MCACA. “Although the need is still great in Michigan’s nonprofit sector, we are pleased to be able to help these outstanding organization preserve jobs and continue to provide exceptional arts and cultural programming in their communities.”
The recovery funds were in addition to MCACA funds previously distributed throughout the state, although the amounts were reduced by executive order in May.
