Michigan State University has been nationally recognized for excellence in nuclear physics, engineering, education and a host of other fields for a long time. What may come as a surprise to even the most informed Spartans, however, is MSU’s recent recognition as one of the best universities in North America for video game design.
One group who was not surprised by the university’s recent number five ranking in The Princeton Review’s “Top Schools for Video Game Design Study for 2011,” was the staff of the College of Communication Arts & Science, where the design program is located.
"We definitely developed the game design and development specialization with the expectations that we would be a national leader,” says Kirsten Khire, Communications Manager for the
College of Communication Arts & Sciences. “We have recruited high quality faculty into the program, expanded it to include graduate courses, integrated it with our research programs, and created a
Games for Entertainment and Learning Lab.”
Though already recognized as a national leader MSU’s video game design program is about to get even better. This fall the university will launch a new Integrated Media Arts program for students from Advertising, Journalism, and Telecommunication, Information Studies, and Media.
“The revamped curriculum is designed to educate a ‘new’ media artist, innovator and storyteller to be fluent in all areas of communication arts,” said Khire, “and to be well equipped to tackle the challenges of a continually evolving and unpredictable industry.”
