East Lansing Recognized on List of 10 "Best College Towns to Start a Business"

Entrepreneur Magazine named East Lansing one of the 10 “Best College Towns to Start a Business" in its October edition.

Michigan State University (MSU) is pulling no punches in an effort to create and incubate new local business ventures,” the magazine says in an article entitled “The Union of Town and Gown.”

East Lansing and MSU are “spreading the small business bug,” it says.

Kudos go to the MSU Product Center for Agricultural and Natural Resources for commercializing new food manufacturers, MSU Technologies for its tech transfer “office on steroids” located in the city’s new Technology Innovation Center, and MSU Business-Connect which links businesses with local resources.

But credit goes not just to the university and the city. Also recognized is The Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) for working with MSU-bred startups in its Springboard program, and the Prima Civitas Foundation, partly funded by MSU, for working to bring biotech and alternative energy projects to the Capital region.

“We’re building an eco-system here that is resulting in a swell of entrepreneurial activity,” says Denyse Ferguson, of LEAP.

The Entrepreneur Magazine recognition shows how well the region is collaborating. “We’re all working together to be successful,” Ferguson says.
