Walkable communities require the creation of sidewalks that are convenient and accessible. A sidewalk that leads nowhere or is difficult to access doesn’t get used. As a result, more cars guzzle fuel and business opportunities get missed.
Members of the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council, including Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) employees, bikers, citizens and architects, are rethinking sidewalk design.
Michigan Now’s Chris McCarus talks with several Council members about how the community can build itself toward walkability.
This radio program also can be heard on public radio stations across the state, including WDET 101.9 FM in Detroit. It is sponsored in part by Capital Gains and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA).
