Sparrow Hospital will open the first portion of its $160 million west wing expansion to patients Jan. 21.
The Eastside Lansing hospital’s 450,000 square foot expansion took more than 27 months to complete and includes a 10-story tower, helicopter pad and an expansive children’s emergency room.
“Today we celebrate the most significant development in health care in mid-Michigan since the opening of the Edward W. Sparrow Hospital at this site in 1912,” says Sparrow President Dennis Swan. “The new Sparrow Tower is the largest single expenditure that has ever been made in this region to expand and improve health care services.”
The new Emergency Department and the Granger Pediatric Emergency Department will be the first departments to serve patients in the new wing. The 62-room facility will be the region’s largest emergency center.
“We believe this is going to match any emergency department nationwide,” says Elizabeth Henry, Sparrow’s senior vice president of Nursing Services.
The Orthopedics Unit, Critical Care Unit, Oncology Unit and Heart and Vascular Center will all be opened by May.
