NorthWest Initiative Consolidates 20 Staff in Redeveloped Walnut School

Lansing's NorthWest Initiative (NWI) has centralized its headquarters and moved closer to its population base.

In October, the NWI consolidated its more than 20 employees—half were working out of the Scott House and half were working out of the School for the Blind—and moved them to the Walnut Street School at 1012 N. Walnut St.

“It was really difficult to be spread out between locations,” says Jessica Yorko with the NWI. “We were at the very southern edge of our service area. Now we’re much more centrally located in the area that we serve, and it’s much more accessible to the public.”

The NWI has space on the first and second floor of the Walnut Street School, which is also home to Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) and Niowave.

The NWI’s new space also includes a community room, where the public can hold meetings and check email.

“All of our programs and this location allow us to have a lot of interface with the people involved with the NorthWest Initiative,” she says.

The NWI is involved with community and business outreach on Lansing’s Westside. From 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.,  Feb. 4, the NWI will host a business breakfast at the Irish Pub on Saginaw.
