By next spring, the Riverwalk Theatre in Downtown Lansing will have a 2,100 square foot black box theater.
The 80-seat black box theater will host one act, experimental plays. Riverwalk Theatre performers have been holding black box performances at the Creole Gallery for the last three years, but when the $300,000 addition is complete, they’ll have a space of their own.
“We’ve been doing black box for three years at the Creole Gallery to see if black box is successful and it’s very successful,” says Mike Siracuse with the Riverwalk Theatre.
The theater started raising funds for the expansion two years ago. Construction will start in September and will be complete by next spring.
“In a time where money is so tight, I cannot stress how honored we are that we could reach this goal so quickly,” Siracuse says. “That’s unheard of.”
