It's always important to know that your hospital is working to meet your needs, but it's even better to find out that the hospital in your region is working for the environment, too.
War Memorial Hospital, in Sault Ste. Marie, was presented with a Leadership in Energy Efficiency award from the Energy Systems Group and Energy services Coalition. The hospital was chosen because of its commitment to energy conservation, sustainability, and innovative infrastructure solutions.
War Memorial Hospital underwent upgrades to the hospital's lighting, steam, and temperature-control systems as well as implementing water-conservation measures, occupancy sensors, and hydraulic elevator upgrades as a two-phase energy-conservation plan. The improvements were originally expected to result in energy savings of more than $270,000 annually, though the actual numbers are even more impressive.
"The project has been a success by improving the infrastructure with new equipment and creating a more environmentally-friendly, energy-conscious facility," says Ken Greenfield, director of plant operations at War Memorial. "This commitment saved War Memorial $310,322 in utility expenditures in the first year and $347,042 in year two."
The company will continue to strive for efficiency as well. It currently has plans to replace boilers installed in the early 1960s and 24-year-old chillers with new, energy-efficient systems. The project is expected to be completed in April.
