Quinnesec paper mill to build a $43-million biomass facility

Any form of recognition in the work place feels good, but to be named the best at what you do by those who employ you and those around you is something special.

Obstetrician-gynecologist Susan Ritter, MD, has been selected as the recipient of the 2010 Marquette General Physician of the Year, The Nurse's Choice award. The most important factor in the selection of this award is the relationship between the doctor and the staff.

"Not only do her patients love her, but the staff also loves to work with her," says Kristen Smith, Clinical Manager of the Marquette General Family Birthing Center and Marquette General Neonatology. "She has a great bedside manner and spends a lot of time with her patients. You will often find her sitting down in a patient's room explaining something or just chatting."

Ritter, who recently retired from her practice at OB/GYN Associates of Marquette as well as from the staff at Marquette General, is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. She completed her residency at the University of Colorado after earning her medical degree at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Prior to that, she had earned her nursing graduate degree at Columbia University Graduate School of Nursing.

Ritter is the second OB/GYN to receive the award after William Addison, MD, who passed away two weeks ago. Other recipients include nephrologist Dr. J. Marc Himes, emergency room Dr. James Addison, Infection disease specialist Dr. John Wallace, cardiovascular surgeon Dr. James Klena, hospitalist Dr. Anne Reese and hospitalist Dr. Eric Ittner.

The award has been presented annually since 2004.
