Community training sessions focus on how to integrate bicycling

Several communities in the U.P. are making great strides toward making their towns friendly toward bicyclists, while others are exploring ways to do so.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is offering a little help in that regard, with a series of "Training Wheels" workshops around the state designed to promote community support of bicycling facilities on existing roads.

One of the workshops will be held in St. Ignace for U.P. community representatives to come find out what they can do better for bicyclists. It's a five-hour class on July 17, and includes both classroom and outdoor instruction.

The "Training Wheels" seminar shows communities how to integrate on-road bike facilities into existing infrastructure, with the goal of making bicycling through and in the community safer and more convenient. The class is designed for municipal managers, council members, engineers, design or planning staff, and is eligible for professional development hours for professional engineers. Advance registration is required, as is a bicycle and helmet.
