Sault Tribe announces 2011-12 scholarship recipients

Almost thirty higher education scholarships were announced from the Sault Tribe for the upcoming school year, going to students in both in-state and out-of-state schools, and undergraduate and graduate programs.

The scholarships were given by the Sault Tribe Higher Education Department and were given based on essays submitted by applicants. They were reviewed by scholarship committee members David Houghton, Barb Smutek, Angeline Boulley and Dan Adams.

"There were almost 100 essays submitted this year. The essays were really well-written, which made it harder for committee members to choose the winners," says Brandi MacArthur, Higher Education administrative assistant. She adds the scholarships are made possible through fundraising, private contributions, local businesses and vendors.

Four special needs scholarships were given at $1,000 each. Ten Bernard Bouschor Honorary Scholarships were given at $1,000 each, to Emily Leask, a student at Michigan State University College of Law; Rachel DeRusha, a senior at University of Michigan; Nicholas Cushman, a senior at University of Michigan; Nicole Hoglund, a freshman at Bay Mills Community College; Joshua Drier, a sophomore at North Central Michigan College; Jacob Ellis, a junior at the U.S. Naval Academy; Vanessa Jenerou, a sophomore at Northern Michigan University; Alexandria Chase, a freshman at Syracuse University; Alexandra Myhal, a sophomore at University of Minnesota; and Tyler Smith, a freshman at Ferris State University.

The $1,000 John P. Carr Scholarship was given to Ian O'Neill, a sophomore at Northern Michigan University, while the $1,000 Don Corp Scholarship was given to Amanda Weinert, a junior at Northern Michigan University. The $150 Pamela Cable Gershon Scholarship went to Chelsey Thorne, a freshman at Northern, and the Joseph K. Lumsden Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, went to Alicia Gervais, a junior at Northern.

The Martha Miller Tributary Scholarship, $1,000, went to Rebecca Patzwald, a graduate student at Michigan State University. The Vic Matson, Sr. Tributary Scholarship, $1,000, went to Cory Forgrave, a graduate student at the Colorado School of Mines. The George K.
