Projects will improve transportation choices in Houghton

Houghton's bike riders will have a little more room for comfort on US-41 thanks to a project by the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The project, which is being funded by a transportation enhancement grant intended to support non-motorized transportation,

"A complete network of paved shoulders will provide connectivity among popular destinations for resident and visitors," says Andy Sikkema, manager of MDOT's Ishpeming Transportation Service Center. "When complete, the network of paved shoulders on US-41 in Houghton County will provide a Lake Michigan-to-Lake Superior connection in the western and central Upper Peninsula."

MDOT is planning on widening about 1.4 miles of paved shoulder on the highway between Airpark Boulevard and Golf Course Road. When the work is complete, shoulders on US-41 will be eight-feet wide from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge in Houghton-Hancock to Mandan Road at the tip of the Upper Peninsula. The project is being paired with road resurfacing that will take place on US-41.
