Placemaking has been on the lips of economic development officials throughout the state as the solution to problems big and small faced by both cities and small towns in Michigan.
U.P. towns are about to get the benefit of the push for better placemaking with a series of workshops held across the U.P. by the MIplace Partnership Initiative.
The idea is to find ways to improve quality of life in communities who want to retain and attract talented workers and local businesses. To that end, the workshops will be held May 26 in Iron Mountain, May 27 in Ishpeming, May 28 in Hancock, and May 29 in Escanaba.
The intended audience is local elected officials, planning commissioners, municipal, county and regional staff, developers and interested citizens. The free workshops consist of three hours of seminars, then a three-hour facilitated workshop to help each community prepare placemaking strategies.
