Pioneer implant approved for Europe, global use

Marquette-based medical tech company Pioneer Surgical Technology has good news again about one of their major products. The nanOss Bioactive bone graft, which Pioneer has been working on for both U.S. and global markets, has had its first approved human implantation in Europe, opening up the possibilities of global distribution.

"Once again we are pleased to announce further geographic expansion of our flagship product nanOss Bioactive. International expansion of our biologics products is a strategic activity for Pioneer Surgical and complements the Pioneer spine products that are already available outside the United States," says executive biologics VP Shane Ray.

The bone graft system combines a proprietary mineral matrix with collagen-based biopolymer to encourage bone growth in spinal bone grafts when implanted. Pioneer has recently showcased nanOss and other products at the 2012 Spine Week Conference in Amsterdam, in order to make connections and explore world markets for its spinal products.

The company was founded in 1992 in Marquette and focuses on researching, developing and marketing spine, orthopedic, cardiovascular and biologic products for the health care industry, and specifically for surgical technology. It established a European subsidiary in the Netherlands in 2006.
