Pioneer has new CEO, first human use of new product

Pioneer Surgical Technology of Marquette has lots of news for the start of 2012, not least of which is the announcement of a new president and CEO.

Daniel Webber will fill the top spot at the precision medical device manufacturer, replacing Jeffery Millin, who was president since 2008 and CEO since 2009.

Millin has been with Pioneer since its beginnings in 1992; the company didn’t give a reason for his move. The board of directors for Pioneer did release a statement, saying, "The board would like to express its appreciation to Jeff Millin for his many roles with and contributions to the company. Jeff has been with Pioneer since its origins and has been an integral part of its growth and success. We wish him continued success in the future."

Webber was previously the company's chief financial officer and has been with Pioneer since 2008. The board statement praised his understanding of the industry, markets and service areas and said his experience and acumen were the reason he was elected by the board to the position.

That news came on the heels of Pioneer's announcement that the first clinical use in humans has begun for the company's nanOss Bioactive 3D product, which is a new three-dimensional bone graft product that promotes bone growth in the spine.

"We are extremely excited to start the clinical phase of nanOss Bioactive 3D. Three-dimensional shapes are popular in spine surgery and with this addition, we now have one of the most extensive biologic portfolios on the market," says Shane Ray, general manager of Pioneer's biologics division.

Pioneer also offers a complete line of synthetic bone grafts and human tissue products, along with accessories, many in its core development area of spinal devices.
