Your vote could help get a $250,000 grant for brain tumor research in the UP

Pepsi Refresh grants have been the goal for many community projects across the country in the last year, and the Upper Peninsula has been no exception.

The latest entry into the race is from the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center, which is seeking $250,000 to help with their research studying stress and quality of life for brain tumor patients.

The grant proposal started October in third place in its health category, but this week is down in the teens. It's not far off from another U.P. contender Second Wave readers might remember, the Copper Harbor Improvement Association, also seeking $250,000 in the same category. The top two vote-getters in each category each month are awarded the money.

Dr. Richard Rovin, head of the center, says the grant will help fund research that should give insight into lengthening life for brain tumor patients and increase survival rates while improving quality of life as well.

"We're doing some basic science research all aimed at understanding better quality of life issues, and how they impact on survival and response to treatment for patients with brain tumors," he says.

The $250,000 would pay for two cancer researchers, two research associates, and research supplies.

Voting is open until the end of October.
