Oldenburg Group wins contract on new aircraft launch system

The Oldenburg Group, which has facilities in Kingsford, has landed itself a contract with General Atomics to assist in the building of motor support structures for the Naval Air Systems Command's Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System program--referred to commonly as EMALS.

The EMALS system is being developed by General Atomics' Electromagnetic Systems division in San Diego, Calif. applies electromagnetic technologies to aircraft launch systems. The EMALS program uses linear motors to launch aircraft from the decks of aircraft carriers.

The motor support structures for the EMALS system, which have to undergo various manufacturing tolerances and advanced quality assurances, will be supplied by Oldenburg.

"We are quite pleased to be selected by General Atomics to participate in the EMALS development," said Tim Nerenz, executive vice president of Oldenburg. "It shows that our commitment to safety and quality is recognized as a competitive advantage; one that is sustainable in any economic climate."

General Atomics initially received the initial multi-million dollar contract, in October 2009. Production on the system is expected to be completed by 2012.
