Student nurses at
Lake Superior State University are getting a head start on caring for patients with their fundraising efforts for the Hospice House, which is a new facility being built by Hospice of the Eastern Upper Peninsula in Sault Ste. Marie.
The Hospice House will allow more local patients to receive hospice care in a home-like setting rather than in a hospital, and is being built at the corner of Ryan and 12th Avenue.
Caity Carter of Sault Ste. Marie leads the group of student nurses, who all are graduating from LSSU with nursing degrees this December. Their goal for the fundraiser is $5,000, and they've been busy planning ways to raise it, including a bake sale and raffle.
"We want to give back to the community and thought this would be a good way to do it," Carter says. "I wanted to raise money because Hospice is a non-profit organization totally run by fund-raising and donations. I want to raise awareness, too, because many people don't even know that a Hospice House is being built."
The event is coming up on Nov. 12 and will take place at Tractor Supply in Sault Ste. Marie. The bake sale runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the raffle drawing will be held at 2 p.m. To get a raffle ticket, purchase something from the bake sale, or make a donation to the Hospice House. Tractor Supply is also donating the raffle prizes.
The Hospice House will meet an increasing need for hospice care in the eastern U.P., in the form of an 8,400-square-foot facility with five patient beds, a sunroom, chapel, family room and space for counseling offices.
