NMU named Earth Day Champion by Johnson Controls for energy efficiency

Johnson Controls named Northern Michigan University to its list of its partner organizations who have cut carbon emissions as "Top Earth Day Champions."

Johnson Controls provides energy efficiency solutions in buildings, and works with businesses and organizations worldwide on renewable energy projects.

The top Earth Day champions list is made up of organizations which have saved the carbon equivalent of 45,000 acres of pine forests through energy improvements at their facilities.

"These organizations have already made significant environmental improvements while at the same time attacking energy waste and reducing operational costs," says Dave Myers, president of Johnson Controls Building Efficiency. "We recognize those who have committed to making their organizations more sustainable, their facilities more efficient, and their occupants more comfortable. Importantly, each one of these projects will also have strong financial paybacks."

Topping the list was Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, which reduced its emissions by 49,135 metric tons, or about 10,477 acres of forest. Northern Michigan University was fifth on the list, reducing its emissions by 22,689 metric tons, or 4,838 acres of forest.

Other companies in the top 5 were the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland and Prince George's County Public Schools in Maryland.
