NewPage files new patent

It looks like NewPage will be creating a new product thanks to a recent patent it received.

The company, which has a factory in Escanaba, recently received a patent for PointTrac TT, a new paper-based substrate for printed Radio Frequency Identification labels.

The new product allows label manufacturers the ability to combine thermal transfer printed variable analog information with advanced Radio Frequency Identification chip technology.

"The NewPage PointTrac TT technology will allow RFID chips to become more widely used in shipping, tracking and transactions by making conversion to this technology more affordable," says Jim Sheibley, director of specialty business and product development.

Since the product will allow for barcodes to be printed on it as well as the use of the chips, the resulting labels being produced will be able to be scanned by line-of-sight devices or by wireless scanners.

PointTrac TT joins the broader range of NewPage specialty label papers used in supply chain and variable data end uses. In addition, NewPage manufactures specialty papers used in flexible packaging, technical and pressure-sensitive labeling applications.
