Michigan Tech student-developed video game now available on Xbox Live

Developing video games is a dream career for a lot of people, and one team of Michigan Tech students made that a reality recently with a game called "Arcane Brawlers," now available on Xbox Live.

The game was made by the Husky Game Development Enterprise, a team of seven Tech students led by co-developer and VP of operations Ryan Wilson. It came about after two years of effort, during which Wilson actually graduated from Tech, in spring of 2011.

"It’s a big accomplishment for me and for HGD," says Wilson. "This demonstrates that we are serious and that we are growing."

The game itself, as you might guess from the name, mixes magic with competitive combat, and is playable by up to four people in the same room. It was a hit at Tech’s 2010 Undergraduate Expo, and now it’s available for purchase and download through Xbox Live for 240 Xbox points, or about $3.

For Wilson, who now works as a software engineer at GE Aviation in Houghton, creating the game also set him on his current career path.

"I was hired at GE Aviation because of my work in HGD," he says. "Companies love Michigan Tech grads, but they especially love the skills we receive through enterprises like HGD."
