Michigan Tech climbs in U.S. News rankings

It’s not news that Michigan Technological University is often listed among the top universities in the U.S. in the annual "Best Colleges" report from U.S. News and World Report.

What is new is that over the last few years, that ranking has steadily climbed, a few places at a time. This year’s edition places Tech at No. 115, tied with Washington State University, Howard University in Washington, DC, and the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.

"We can’t infer too much from a small change in our ranking, but it is going in the right direction, from 121 in 2010, to 117 in 2011, to 115 today," says Michigan Tech Provost Max Seel. "We are making progress toward our goal of becoming a premier technological research university."

In the public university category, Michigan Tech was ranked No. 57, the same as in 2011.

Other characteristics of Tech were recognized; the school also made the list of top U.S. engineering schools issuing doctorates. It was ranked No. 66, up from No. 74 in 2011.

It also was included in a special listing of "A-Plus Schools for B Students," which was a category of top-quality schools who admit a percentage of students with ACT scores between 20 and 30.

"This speaks to the attention our undergraduate students are receiving," says Seel. "It highlights the level and quality of our education and is an important indicator of student satisfaction."
