Mini-series pilot to be filmed in U.P.

It looks like the Upper Peninsula is going to get a few minutes in the limelight thanks to the filming of a television show pilot that will be coming this month.

The show, called The Wake, is a series about post-apocalyptic events that takes place in the future. The Upper Peninsula, says Chicago-based co-creator and director Noah Kloor, was a perfect fit for a location.

"We chose the Upper Peninsula after quite a bit of location scouting in April and May," says Kloor. "The show takes place in an environment that we wanted to be equal parts harsh and beautiful and the landscape of the Lake Superior coast of the U.P. works wonderfully for that. Add to that the small coastal towns and we knew we had found our location."

The show, says Kloor, will begin shooting Aug. 9-21 and will be using local for extras and a few speaking parts. Information will be available on The Wake website.

"Though we have general thoughts and do know quite a few locations, four of us are coming up the first week of August to finalize our specific locations for each scene," says Kloor. "We will be looking at locations (primarily on the coast) around and between Marquette and Munising."

Once the crew completes the pilot episode, they will begin attempting to market it to distributors. If it gains interest, they are expecting to shoot parts of the remainder of the series in the U.P. as well.
