It must be official now: The U.P. is a pretty military-friendly place. G.I. Jobs published its annual list of 2012 Military Friendly Schools, and every school in the U.P. is on it.
The qualifications for the listing were based on a number of military-friendly attributes and services for both active military and veterans. The list recognizes the top 20 percent of schools that embrace U.S. service members and veterans.
Finlandia University, Michigan Technological University, Northern Michigan University, Lake Superior State University and Bay de Noc Community College all made the list, which was chosen from more than 8,000 schools nationwide.
"Finlandia University’s campus-wide mission is to make sure all students have opportunities for one-on-one, individualized attention and the personal and academic support they need," says Craig Kangas, Finlandia senior enrollment officer. "This is often of particular importance to veterans. We work hard to ensure that each of our students is aware of and takes advantage of the many resources we provide to nurture academic success and personal growth."
The small school has more than 20 active duty military personnel and veterans enrolled this fall.
Attributes required to make the list include participation in the GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill, ROTC collaborations, and membership in the Service Members Opportunity Colleges Consortium.
